The Hull-House neighborhood was located just north of the original Maxwell Street Market where many immigrants opened businesses and sold handmade-goods, fresh produce, meats and retail items. The Hull-House Settlement advocated for immigrant communities and created welcoming gathering spaces for newcomers. When neighborhood change transformed the Near West Side, residents fought to preserve their neighborhood and the Maxwell Street Market, chanting and waving banners that read, "WE’RE HERE TO STAY!"
